Sweater of many colors

October 20, 2007

I dreamed I knitted the Lara sweater and the yarn all looked gray in artificial light, but then when I woke up, the yarn turned out to be many different colors–white, yellow, green, gray, red–visible as different only in natural light.

The dog with a hole and the maggot baby

October 19, 2007

I was looking at a golden retriever on a leash. It turned and worried its side and a big hunk of golden fur fell to the ground. I bent down and started to say “awww…” and then realized there was skin attached to the chunk of fur. I looked at the dog and there was a matching hole in its shoulder, through which you could clearly see its muscles and bones, some 3″ below the skin, as though the skin were a stiff, hollow shell. There was an injury on the dog’s muscle and I could see a few maggots writhing around in its flesh. “Your dog has lost its graft,” I said to the owner, who explained how they had to debride the wound and then put the skin back on. I was holding something in my arms that started to squirm and vibrate and I realized it was a big maggot swaddled up like a baby.

Dinner with the frat brothers, food poisoning in Venice

October 18, 2007

I was on a trip to Venice with Rahul’s school, but he was off to some sort of company visit or something, so I was left to fend for myself. Some guy asked if I wanted to go to dinner and I realized while we were out that he was thinking of it as a date. A couple of frat guys came up and said hi and he introduced them. Later, I was at his frat house and someone said “Yeah, a couple of the brothers met you at dinner they told him later there was no way you’d be interested.” I said “Well, I have a boyfriend I’ve been dating for six years, and I don’t think he knew that. I didn’t realize it was supposed to be a date.”

Then I was back at the hotel. They had a big glass counter full of pastries at the front desk. I was looking at them and feeling hungry when I ran into two girls named Ping and Sheena and we decided to go out for dinner. We had walked out into the street a ways when I suddenly realized I was supposed to have been working.

I turned around to head back, and Ping did too. In my dream, she was Japanese, and wearing a kimono. She had food poisoning, though, and kept bending over to vomit up green moldy stuff in increasingly smaller piles on the sidewalk.

Shiba Inu

October 8, 2007

Rahul and I were with Tiffany, and for some reason we had to all sleep together in a bed, naked, but nonsexual. My mom suddenly opened the door and was deeply embarrassed.

Then we walked Tiffany’s Shiba Inu for a while.

I was living in Venice, but married to A., but he was a fellow foreigner–Scottish–and working as a baker in the local supermarket. I walked into the supermarket to say hi, and looked at the produce bins–his tall glass case and counter with all the bread was to the right, down at the end, at the left, in a stack of wooden baskets tipped sideways, was some yarn: Rowan Calmer, in pink and white, for $6.75. I couldn’t decide if I should buy any. It was stacked among some fruits that looked like Santa Rosa plums in texture, dark and shiny, but were shaped like knobbly potatoes. There was also a gigantic Red Delicious apple the size of a basketball. He walked over to say hi and I asked him if he’d seen the apple. In my dream, the word for apple was “pomelo,” with the accent on “mel,” rather than “mela.” I touched it, and a little corner of it was mealy-soft rather than crisp.

In my dream, I remembered going to the corner cafe and newsstand and someone there saying something about my husband. There was a word she used, a slang term, for a Scottish person, and I can’t remember at all what it was. “Il ____.” Affectionate.
